RALEIGH (February 12, 2025) – State Superintendent Mo Green doesn’t know what forms Donald Trump’s efforts to eliminate the federal Department of Education might take.
But he does know it won’t be good.
“There’s been lots of variations on what might happen, and so we don’t really know at this point,” Green says in the accompanying video recorded in December, before President Donald Trump was reported to be preparing an order to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education.1
“There are significant dollars attached to the Department of Education that provide enormous resources in a number of different areas. Things like, for students who attend schools where a number of them are socially, economically disadvantaged. Students who have exceptional needs,” Green says.
“You’re talking about hundreds of millions, over billions of dollars that … do go to support these students currently. The elimination of those dollars would dramatically impact North Carolina’s ability to deliver the education that it currently delivers,” he says.
“And recognize that North Carolina already finds itself near the bottom with what it funds our public schools. So this would only be a more dramatic negative impact to our ability to educate our children appropriately.”
